Hair loss problem
The hair loss problem has become a very common depressing issue among individuals these days and the best remedy to overcome this problem is the hair plug surgery, which is widely in practice ever since mid-twentieth century. In this surgery, hair follicles are removed from the part of the scalp which has some healthy growth of hair, known as the donor area, and then reinserted into the bald patch of scalp, known as the recipient. The hair plug surgery is known as the hair micro-transplantation in modern days.
The donor scalp contains hair follicles growing in groups of 2-4 hair. In hair plug surgery, these follicular groups are transplanted to the recipient scalp. This process is known as the Follicular Unit Transplantation. There are
mainly two methods for extraction of hair from the donor scalp – Strip harvesting and the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) harvesting method. Both the method of hair plug surgery is implemented under the action of local anesthesia.
As the name suggests, in the strip harvest method, a strip of tissue is removed from the donor scalp, made smaller in size and then transplanted in the recipient site. The removal of tissue leaves back a linear wound at the donor region. The Follicular Unit Extraction is a relatively modern method and requires lesser recovery time as compared to the former method. It involves hair follicles to be removed singly and is uniquely reinserted by puncturing the recipient site with the help of a micro blade. Thus there are no prominent scars or pain observed in this method.
When it comes to taking care after the hair plug surgery, the main part is to dress the wound everyday till its complete recovery. The recipient region should not be exposed to the sun. Shampooing is generally recommended minimum two days after the hair plug treatment. Usually, the transplanted hair falls off within ten days after the surgery and new hair replaces them at the transplanted follicular site within two or three months. In the following six to eight months, the growth of the hair becomes normal and healthy.
There are several factors which help to estimate the average expense of hair plug, the area of baldness being the most important one among all. The follicle that is being removed is known as a graft. For hair transplant, the patient is charged on per-unit basis of the grafts. Each session of hair replacement includes approximately 1000-4000 grafts. Thus depending upon the balding patch, a session may cost a person from several hundreds to a few thousands. Also, the rates of hair plug surgery vary from one country to another. Even the natural hair texture has a vital influence on the costs involved. Specialized doctors have been actively looking forward to the improved and cost effective methods for treating the hair loss problem in both men and women.
Therefore, the hair plug surgery may initially seem expensive, but it is quite affordable as there is just a one-time expense involved. In a way, the hair plug is also a boon for the upliftment of an individual’s self-confidence.
